Tulsa Architecture - Art Deco captured in paintings, brick by brick
A Tulsa artist and blogger you must meet is Celeste Vaught. She is painting highlights of the heritage of Tulsa Architecture, and you can follow her work on her blog, Tulsa, Brick x Brick.
A short drive through downtown Tulsa will quickly explain her fascination with the art deco architecture - and Celeste is doing an amazing job of capturing the beauty of the elegant buildings for which many of us share fond memories.
Buildings she has painted thus far include:
- Atlas Life Sign
- Claud's Hamburgers
- Phoenix Cleaners
- Fairgrounds Pavilion
- Guaranty Laundry Building (Page Moving and Storage)
- Boulder on the Park
- Bill White Chevrolet (4th and Elgin)
- 320 South Boston Building
- Philtower Entrance
- Tulsa Monument Company Building (Benchmark Monument Company)
- Will Rogers High School
- The Brook
- City Veterinary Hospital
- Warehouse Market Building

Celeste came up with an idea to further enhance the interest of the "Tulsa Brick x Brick" series by inviting others to share their memories and experiences involving Tulsa places. If you're fond of a particular building or place in Tulsa, have a story to share or just want to say what the building/place means to you and why you like it, drop by Celeste’s blog and write a note.
My favorite painting by far is the one of the Atlas Life Building, which is where I worked in the early 1980s after college graduation. I am trying to decide if I should share the story of sneaking to the building’s rooftop where my boyfriend and I would spend romantic moments while viewing the downtown lights. It was a special and magical place.
New pieces from Celeste Vaught's "Tulsa Brick x Brick" series are on display at Pearl Gallery at 1201 East 3rd Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma and can be seen Tuesday through Friday 11-5, Thursdays til 7 and other times by appointment.
For those of you who love Tulsa architecture and our historical buildings in downtown and midtown Tulsa, do visit Celeste’s blog to see her awesome paintings. Oh, and I’ve included her painting of the Brook on Peoria Avenue - aren’t the colors brilliant?

Lori, thanks for this very interesting post. I have to say I'm taking a break to look at her blog. Nice post for your area Localism.
Lori, Nice post. I am such a fan of artists-typically not those that are so well known, but just artists. Her work looks splendid-the concept is great. If you are in an old city like New Orleans, all of the artists displaying their wares, and so many with the buildings....memories.
Thank you ladies. I just met Celeste and I'm IMPRESSED by her work and how quickly she is churning it out. On her blog and FB page, people are beginning to request which building she should paint next. Would LOVE to surprise hubby with a painting of our home which was built in 1915.
She is a very talented lady. Thank you for introducing her to us. Very nice localism post!
Blog on!
Judi - thank you so much!! Looking forward to meeting you in Dallas!!
My friends reported from Red Oak today that snow/ice had not hit -- only rain. Hope you are safe and comfy also!
Great stuff. It was a great loss for Oklahoma City when in the late 1950's and early 1960's they embraced "urban renewal". The city hired I.M Pei to redesign a vision of downtown. That vision included the destruction of art deco. As I look to the souless glass structures downtown I think that if Albert Speer was alive today he would say welcome to the new Berlin.
Those are some beautiful paintings! Art Deco has always been one of my favorites. I love to go to South Beach in Miami and just stroll around. Thanks for sharing!
Joe - that's sad. Thankfully, are older downtown buildings any many in midtown Tulsa are in tact and being refurbished. Next time you're in Tulsa, we'll take a tour!
Dixie - beautiful indeed. I'm amazed at how well she captures their beauty. Will keep South Beach in mind should I ever visit Miami!
Hi Lori, I have not seen much of Tulsa but what I have, I like very much. Our son attends Tulsa University and the town reminds me a lot of a smaller (and much cooler) Austin back in the 1970's. As a fan of Art Deco I enjoyed the paintings and will check out your friends site!
Russell, for a large town, it really seems quite small. Please DO call the next time you plan to visit your son!
It's usually a rare occasion but I will touch base next time I am in the area! Thanks!
