Our skittish pup, Theo, is finding his way
Demetrius and I adopted Theodore (Theo) from the Collinsville shelter on Father’s Day this year. Hence his name, Theo – Demetrius’ middle name is Theodore, named after his father, Theodore. So, that makes our 4-legged family addition the third generation Theo.
The shelter didn’t know much about his background, but we assume he was abused. He shivered for weeks and would hide when friends came over.
He’s a blue heeler mix, which are generally friendly and smart dogs – so we’re just loving him until he understands that he’s safe here.
We started taking him to the Bark Park, and while he doesn’t play much with the other pups, he allows the people to pet him. We also discovered that he knows how to fetch and can run pretty darn fast.
Theo loves riding in the car, so I take him with me when I’m running errands or off to the grocery store. He is getting much more comfortable with our active lifestyle and loves hanging out with Mom & Dad.
It’s hard to imagine not having a pup in our home. If you’re considering adopting a pet, visit the Humane Society of Tulsa’s web site.

Funny thing about dogs - they love unconditionally. I have a pillow that is embroidered, "When I grow up, I want to be the person my dog believes I am."

Lori,
I'm so glad Theo found YOU!! I have a friend who adopted a very large white dog from a shelter. Then, within a month, they found a black lab mix on their street...and could never locate the owner. "Snow" and "Lucky" are best friends now...and this family adores them both!! I think a lot of people who are going into foreclosure abandon their pets b/c they are unable to care for them...or they won't be able to take them into an apartment. Glad your Theo is thriving in his new, loving environment!!
Congrats on the new addition to your family. I am sure Theo will come around in time. Both of my current dogs were "rescue babies". Sasha was abused whenever anyone cam over she hid under the dining room table or behind the couch for about two years. She is now a lap monkey and loves to ride in the car and is very affectionate and even sleeps on the bed with us. Twice the backyard gate was left open and all she would do was peek out. She knows a good thing and is not about to run away!
;)
Our older standard poodle is Hope. She was rescued from a puppy mill. She couldn't walk and was afraid of grass since she had never set foot on it. She still runs to the bathroom form lighting because she was kept outside in a pen exposed. She possesses more soul than I find in humans. When I was getting sick last year not knowing I had cancer, Hope was getting sick with me and losing weight. As I went through treatment last year, she never left my side when I came home to the apartment where I lived, and as I got better she started gaining weight and getting better. I love dogs. They live for the moment and they want your attention and affection. Hope knew something was wrong and I think was trying to show me that I needed to get to the Doctor. She reminded me how as humans we need to not fotget that we are of this earth, and unified to all things, including dogs that sometimes can be smarter than we are. Good luck and health to your new love.
We recently adopted a 3 year old mal labrador. It's been pretty challenging, but very rewarding as well.
I have a rescue place around the corner from me and people volunteer to walk the dogs there. I wish I could adopt them all, but I don't want the responsibility of even one. I would never leave my place. Great that you did that, Lori. Theo is one lucky dog.
Lori - As a long time dog mama, all of my "fur babies" have been adopted rescues. Like Theo, many were timid and fearful of people and loud noises in the beginning; we also suspected that they were abused. One of our current babies runs from children, I think it's pretty obvious why.
Hubby and I just give them the same unconditional love they give us. We simply can't imagine our home without a "fur baby" in it. Below are our three current "fur babies": Sadie (corgi mix), Joie (springer spaniel mix) and our big boy Dawson (goldie).
Sonja - actually in Tulsa, we set up a number for Realtors to call when they become aware of abandoned animals due to foreclosures. Sad that people would just leave them behind. Glad Snow and Lucky found a great home!
Betina - two years, really? We don't seem to notice the progress Theo is making because we see him each day, but friends that drop by notice his progress. Right now, he's at my feet playing with a squeaky toy!
Joe - yes, they do live for the moment and I believe they know more about us than we know about ourselves. Hope sounds like an amazing pup!
Melissa - congrats on your adoption! I love labs!
Jane - at least you understand that it's a responsibility. I don't get people that have animals and never pay attention to them. I would be in trouble if I lived close to a rescue place.
Theo is at my feet, and I can tell he's thinking, "Mom, are you STILL blogging?" :-)
Donne - what a GREAT photo of your family! I forgot to mention that Theo practically jumps out of his skin at the smallest noise. Even when Deme opens a pop can, he use to run out of the room! He's getting better, day by day.
Lori - LOL at Theo's squeaky toys. Even after 1.5 years, my little Sadie baby (the corgi) is still a little "nervous Nellie". She's the one who is afraid of children as well as the vacuum cleaner, my blow-dryer and the blender and hides in my closet under my dresses when she's scared. However, she just LOVES her squeaky toys - the more the better.
If one of the other doggies steals one of her squeaky toys, she barks at them until they drop it. They're all ball hounds and would love nothing more than for hubby and I to play fetch with them for hours on end. They even bring their balls to bed with them. LOL
Lori- What a cutie Theo is! Sure he will continue to come out of his shell more and more, day by day. At this time we are pup less, but a few of our neighbors share their furry children with us. One has his daily ride around in the golf cart! Theo is a lucky little guy to have found such a loving family. Now we will need Theo updates on a regular basis.
