I made a trip last month to Red Oak Oklahoma to attend my friend's bridal shower.
She insisted that we drive off the beaten path to Tamaha, Oklahoma, where I saw the most HUGE pin oak tree EVER.
My friend Kalyn had campaigned in this area years earlier and saw this HUGE tree by the Senior Citizen Center in Tamaha, Oklahoma - she was AMAZED at the size, but the locals thought nothing of it, as "it had always been there."
So, after the bridal shower, Kalyn, Janie and I met Kalyn's mother and aunt in Tamaha. According to Wikipedia, Tamaha had 198 residents after the 2000 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.4 square miles (16.7 km²), of which, 6.4 square miles (16.6 km²) of it is land and 0.16% is water.
The largest oak tree in Oklahoma - maybe the world?
These four adult women (see photo) stretched to hold hands in an attempt to encircle the tree trunk while I snapped a photo. The four were unable to encircle it - a fifth adult was needed.
My friend Janie is a bit of a tree expert and estimated the tree's age to be over 300 years.I had to walk about a football field length away to snap the photo of the full tree.
Oklahoma - it's not the barren land you might think!

Lori, I'm impressed to see a tree like that in Oklahoma. I'm originally from Wichita Kansas and I don't ever remember seeing a big tree like that.
That's an amazing tree! When you experience a tree like this it is almost spiritual. It's as if you can feel the presence of God when you stand in its shadow.

I registered the tree on a national list of potential giants.
An Okla., forester called me on the Feb- 5- 2010. I described the tree, he said he would drive over
and measure the tree and let me know what he finds out about the size, measurements and all.
I measured maybe 84" in diameter. He said the record pin oak in Okla., is 66"in diameter.

Good morning. I am the keeper of the Champion Trees of Oklahoma Registry, www.forestry.ok.gov/champion-trees. This wonderful Southern Red Oak has been on the register since 1983. While not the largest Southern Red Oak in the state it is definitely a beauty and a wonderful piece of history for the town of Tamaha.
Justin our local forester called me today. He measured the tree at 20 ft circumference. 66" diameter.
I thought it was larger. You guys measured 5 arms stretched around circumference.
He is waiting to find out what type of oak it is.
He also said it is similar in size to other giant oaks in Okla. Will keep you posted. Ron

I have known about this tree since I was born... my family is from Tamaha and we used to have family reunion's there every year... it is the biggest tree I have seen in oklahoma and I took my new fiance there this past year and I got a photo of me and just the tree.... I will use it as my pic if I can... Thanks for posting about it!
